Doggie Days
Hey there,
So I am currently dog sitting for a lovely woman and her dog named Bella. I will be here in Adams Morgan for 6-7 days. I am working away for the etsy site, though I got an email last week about GW showcasing incoming student work- I must submit 3 by the end of July. While I dog and house sit, I've also been reading up about native plants and teaching myself to play guitar further. It's so peaceful to be at a slow pace nowadays, though I look forward to the balance of slow and busy-ness in my near future.

May days.
I currently have many ideas swimming in my head for the summer, but it's too soon to share. One of them is the etsy site. I gratefully had an a-hah moment a few weeks ago after my spring semester of pre-req requirements. After applying for several jobs with no responses ranging from everything to art assistant to a cashier at my local Fashion Bug, nothing has been pulling through. Then I came across a Zen blog about creating your own job, and it struck something inside me. I've had this constant nudge to be true to myself, yet I've often wondered "how". Not many people have the priviledge of expanding on their creativity, but I don't exactly have a priviledge either.. I'm choosing to make this a priority. It makes sense in a way. If you can't find a job, make your own job. There is no denying what I was born to do, and that is to share new ideas, new beauty, new anything. This is exactly what I should do, despite money currently being very tight. I don't get much as a babysitter/dogsitter. As such, I've been forming a plan to get my job(s) started soon, so I can translate all this into reality as mentioned before, and authentically help support myself through school.
Currently, I am thinking about my pappa. I love this photo of him with a student somewhere in Texas.

hunches
When I'm not going around sporatically caring for animals and wee-ones I make whimsical little rabbit illustrations that I am turning into stationery. Etsy site will be posted soon.

Starting a new
Hello! It's been over a year since I've updated this blog. I have decided to leave the Interior Design program at GWU and I will pursue a BA in Art Therapy this coming fall. I figure since I'm still attending GWU and grad school, I should keep this blog going. Much has happened since I've left I.D in the fall semester. I have taken a handful of psychology courses over the spring semester and have continued on with my nurturing-type jobs- dogsitting, babysitting, and nannying. I'd like to work in the medical field in the near future with people who have developmental disabilities and senior citizens.
It may seem like a strange turn from the glamorous world of art and design that I know I would have done well in, but Art Therapy is still very much art oriented with a hands on approach to self-healing, -an aspect of myself that I've finally decided to cherish. Slowly, I hope to to be part of the movement that encourages my clients and anyone I may encounter to be open to self-healing whether it'd be through art, writing, dancing, and or music.
Happy blogging!

DC Townhome
For the second assignment in Residential we were given a DC townhome. I went with a soul food, sultry concept rolled into one - "savor". Here is the end result.
On second thought, my computer chooses not to load my photos. I will upload it very soon.

Assignment 6: Pres. Tech.

Moving along to this assignment..
We were asked to design packaging for an object, any object. I chose this Zuni bracelet and thought of a venue it would be appropriately sold at. This piece of jewelry is like a diamond in the rough. A piece of jewelry that is more then what it seems. There are no diamonds or crystals, but it hold a lot of meaning and depth. That's what I love about it. My father, of mexican/spanish/ and Apache heritage; purchased it from a welder on a reservation, in the 1960's. The pure and honest energy I get from it is overwhelming. There is also a twing of sadness, appropriately so.
I was drawn to Oregon, since so many of my favorite (Alela Diane, Mariee Sioux, Joanna Newsom, etc.) musicians are from the west coast. I researched and found psychadelic Oregon Country Fair 2011. NOW. I know the scene of carefree hippies may not be the exact best place to buy expensive native american jewelry, but I figured these fairs are becoming more and more popular, policed, commercialized, and higher priced- new vendors would probably be welcomed in order to meet the demands for authenticity. I've never been to Oregon, or even a country fair but I figured this would be a win-win situation.
Drawing from my inspirations, I decided to create packaging that was simple and showcased the jewelry, in a realistic way. Jewelry boxes are nice, but they're clunky, not creative, and can even accidently open. With the clear packaging, it takes up less space, it's flexible, you can see the jewelry, and protects the jewelry even better since it's not going anywhere. I added the thread at the bottom, which to me resembled a road. This was done in Illustrator, and in the end I am happy with the results.
